Around the world, researchers are working extremely hard to develop new treatments and interventions for COVID-19 with new clinical trials opening nearly every day. This directory provides you with information, including enrollment detail, about these trials. In some cases, researchers are able to offer expanded access (sometimes called compassionate use) to an investigational drug when a patient cannot participate in a clinical trial.
The information provided here is drawn from ClinicalTrials.gov. If you do not find a satisfactory expanded access program here, please search in our COVID Company Directory. Some companies consider expanded access requests for single patients, even if they do not show an active expanded access listing in this database. Please contact the company directly to explore the possibility of expanded access.
Emergency INDs
To learn how to apply for expanded access, please visit our Guides designed to walk healthcare providers, patients and/or caregivers through the process of applying for expanded access. Please note that given the situation with COVID-19 and the need to move as fast as possible, many physicians are requesting expanded access for emergency use. In these cases, FDA will authorize treatment by telephone and treatment can start immediately. For more details, consult FDA guidance. Emergency IND is the common route that patients are receiving convalescent plasma.
Search Tips
To search this directory, simply type a drug name, condition, company name, location, or other term of your choice into the search bar and click SEARCH. For broadest results, type the terms without quotation marks; to narrow your search to an exact match, put your terms in quotation marks (e.g., “acute respiratory distress syndrome” or “ARDS”). You may opt to further streamline your search by using the Status of the study and Intervention Type options. Simply click one or more of those boxes to refine your search.

Coronavirus Disease 19 (COVID-19) is a global pandemic caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Severe disease occurs in 15% of the cases with COVID-19 and may progress to critical disease in only 5% of the cases with a high risk of mortality. Critical disease may present as acute respiratory failure secondary to Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) and is caused by the body's hyper-immune response to the virus in the form of a cytokine storm syndrome (CSS). There is currently no effective anti-viral treatment against SARS-CoV-2 and the mainstay of treatment is supportive. Co-trimoxazole (combination of trimethoprim and sulphamethoxazole in a 1:5) ratio is a Sulphur containing anti-folate bactericidal antibiotic indicated for the treatment of respiratory tract infections. It has been around for over 60 years and is inexpensive and readily available with a good safety profile. It has a rapid onset of action with excellent bioavailability and lung penetration. In addition to having antimicrobial properties co-trimoxazole have immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties and may be a potential treatment option for cytokine storm syndrome mediated severe COVID-19. This open-label randomized controlled trial will be conducted in the department of medicine at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Anwar Khan Modern Medical college and Mughda Medical College Hospital (DMCH), Dhaka for a duration of 6 months following approval of this protocol. It will recruit at least 94 consecutive adults (18 years or older) patients with clinically suspected COVID-19 and severe illness as per WHO criteria. After taking informed written consent patients will be randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to either oral co-trimoxazole in addition to standard therapy or standard therapy alone. Baseline characteristics, changes in the physiological and biochemical parameters like (SpO2/FiO2 ratio, respiratory rate, body temperature and C - reactive protein), length of hospital stay, side effects of drugs, requirement for ventilatory support (non-invasive and invasive ventilation) and in-patient mortality between the two groups will be compared. Conclusion If the results from this clinical trial demonstrate the beneficial effects of co-trimoxazole in severe COVID-19 patients it could be used widely, thereby reducing the need for respiratory support and potentially saving thousands of lives in developing nations with limited resources where healthcare may be easily overwhelmed.

COVID-19 is impacting on health systems in Brazil and worldwide. Reducing the risk of clinical deterioration and prolonged disease duration in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 may alleviate the burden caused by the pandemic. Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) has demonstrated antiapoptotic, antioxidative, and anti-inflammatory roles and has been suggested as a potential protector against organ injuries and even mediate lower mortality rates after polymicrobial sepsis in animal models. Melatonin agonists may modulate protective effects against acute lung injury and play a clinical role in individuals with SARS-CoV-2 infection. The investigators proposed a clinical trial testing the effects of ramelteon 8mg in hospitalized patients with COVID-19.
Bandim Health Project
The number of cases of COVID-19 is still increasing and transmission of SARS-CoV-2 seems to occur mainly through person-to-person transmission through respiratory droplets, indirect contact with infected people and surfaces. The use of face masks is recommended as a public health measure, but in many settings only domestic cloth made masks are available to the majority of the people. However, masks can be of different quality and very little is known about the utility of cloth face masks at the community level. In Bandim Health Project's Health and Demographic Surveillance System we will evaluate the effect of providing locally produced cloth face masks on severity of COVID-19 like illness and mortality in an urban population. The locally produced cloth mask is made according to a laboratory certified model and will be provided to the intervention group alongside information of how the risk of transmission can be reduced. The control group will receive information alone. Follow-up will be implemented through telephone calls and post-epidemic home visits.

Physician burnout has a significant impact on the wellness and productivity of physicians as well as patient health outcomes. Managing burnout among frontline workers is critical to Canada's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, in order to support frontline workers and reduce inefficiencies and medical errors frequently linked to burnout, ultimately improving our ability to detect, treat and manage COVID-19 cases. Therefore, this trial aims to assess the effects of an 8-session intervention over 3 months for burnout in physician residents in residency programs in Canada and the United States of America during the COVID-19 pandemic. This trial will provide evidence to inform health system management and public health response early and effectively so as to maintain the integrity of our workforce during and post-pandemic. The virtual delivery platform renders the proposed intervention easily disseminated internationally, in low- middle- and high- income countries and across urban and rural cities.

There is a considerable variation in the disease behavior in terms of contracting the infection, manifesting none to a range of symptoms and severity of the infection among individuals exposed to or infected with SARS-CoV-2 virus, the causative organism of COVID-19. Although the respiratory system appears to be the primary target of this virus infection, emerging evidences suggests involvement of extra-pulmonary organs including central nervous system. We aim to compare the genetic profile of individuals with vs without COVID-19 after being exposed to infected cases. Additionally, we will assess the cognitive function in covid-19 positive cases with vs. without neurological symptoms at the time of infection and 1-month follow-up using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) questionnaire.

A crisis situation leads to changes in life. During December 2019, many people contracted pneumonia in the Chinese city of Wuhan. On January 7, 2020, the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) was identified as the cause of this disease. Within five months, the virus spread around the globe and forced countries to restrict public life. Due to the high infection rates in Europe, a lockdown followed between March and April 2020 (except in Sweden). As the number of infections decreased, European countries began to gradually relax the lockdown from May 2020. The lockdown and the later stages of loosening have an impact on lifestyle. Institutions of higher education must also adapt to this situation and have switched to distance learning. The University of Applied Sciences of Bern (BFH), Department of Health Professions with the Departments (DHP) of Nutrition and Dietetics and Physiotherapy, considers the question of the degree to which nutritional and exercise behavior has changed. The findings provide recommendations for future crises for students and employees of the BFH-DHP. In order to achieve this, at the BFH-DHP two anonymous online surveys will be conducted.

Communication with patients on their clinical status is important in delivering care in the emergency department. During times of high volume or complex patients, there may be lapses in communicating with patients about their hospital course or plans of action. These miscommunications may be enhanced during the current COVID-19 pandemic as there is minimized in-person interaction with patients in order to conserve personal protective equipment and decrease the risk of disease transmission. This study utilizes a virtual white board to deliver updates to patients about the status of their emergency department stay.

This research study will evaluate the association of Androgen Receptor (AR) gene expression and COVID-19 disease severity and mortality. The research procedure involves collection of a single saliva sample which will be mailed to the participants by the study team. This saliva will be used in a COVID-19 Androgen Sensitivity Test (CoVAST) which will detect AR gene expression. Eligible participants are males, at least 18 years or older, and have tested positive for COVID-19.
