Around the world, researchers are working extremely hard to develop new treatments and interventions for COVID-19 with new clinical trials opening nearly every day. This directory provides you with information, including enrollment detail, about these trials. In some cases, researchers are able to offer expanded access (sometimes called compassionate use) to an investigational drug when a patient cannot participate in a clinical trial.
The information provided here is drawn from ClinicalTrials.gov. If you do not find a satisfactory expanded access program here, please search in our COVID Company Directory. Some companies consider expanded access requests for single patients, even if they do not show an active expanded access listing in this database. Please contact the company directly to explore the possibility of expanded access.
Emergency INDs
To learn how to apply for expanded access, please visit our Guides designed to walk healthcare providers, patients and/or caregivers through the process of applying for expanded access. Please note that given the situation with COVID-19 and the need to move as fast as possible, many physicians are requesting expanded access for emergency use. In these cases, FDA will authorize treatment by telephone and treatment can start immediately. For more details, consult FDA guidance. Emergency IND is the common route that patients are receiving convalescent plasma.
Search Tips
To search this directory, simply type a drug name, condition, company name, location, or other term of your choice into the search bar and click SEARCH. IRCCS San Raffaele
This retrospective-prospective longitudinal observational study was designed to evaluate the role of bedside lung ultrasound per se and in association with hemogasanalysis parameters in predicting the severity of COVID-19 patients in the Emergency Departement (ED). Retrospective data regarding patients who presented at the ED of IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital from 10/11/2020, together with those acquired by the observation of patients who will access to the ED until 10/05/2021 will be collected, configuring a total enrollment period of 6 months. Clinical informations about patients' medical history will be recorded, with particular focus on the type and date of onset of the symptoms. The diagnostic and therapeutic strategy will be chosen according to the current standard of care. Results of bedside lung ultrasound, together with vital parameters, blood gas analysis, laboratory and other findings will be recorded. The primary outcome will be defined as patients' outcome at time of discharge from the ED, in terms of intensity of required care (home discharge, low or high-intensity care hospitalization, death). Secondary outcomes will be patients' prognosis 30 days after access to ED and the required intensity of care (eg need for non-invasive ventilation, oro-tracheal intubation). The follow-up 30 days after access to the ED will be evaluated by telephone survey or by consulting medical records.
Hospital Clínico Universitario de Valladolid
We conducted a national, single center (Hospital Clínico Universitario de Valladolid, Spain, Valladolid), prospective study of patients with prior hospitalization because of COVID-19 who were admitted between March 1st, 2020, and May 15th, 2020. All eligible patients underwent at least at first-time follow-up from the index event. Exclusion criteria were age < 18 years old, pregnant women, terminally ill patients, active SARS-CoV-2 infections, inability to exercise and previous known severe pulmonary or heart disease. Patients underwent a clinical assessment for symptom burden, questionnaire for quality of life (Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire and SF-36), venous blood sampling, 6-minute walking test (6-MWT), tests of lung function (spirometry and diffusing capacity of the lungs for carbon monoxide) and treadmill cardio-pulmonary exercise testing (CPET). 48-hours before the test of lung function and the CPET, all patients yielded a negative result in the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for SARS-CoV-2. For definitive analysis patients were assigned to the control group if they did not refer dyspnea at the time of the follow-up, a small asymptomatic out-patient control group without prior hospitalization was also included.

In this monocentric, prospective and descriptive trial we want to evaluate the long-term consequences for patients treated for Covid-19. Covid patients who were hospitalized for min. 5 days either in a Covid-19 department or in intensive care unit will be followed-up for 8 weeks after hospital discharge. This is done via an innovative electronic platform in the home environment (UZA@home). On the one hand the quality of life, rehabilitation and reintegration of the patient will be evaluated and on the other hand the patient will be screened for various psychosocial aspects such as anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress syndrome.

Study Objectives: To perform COVID-19 diagnostic and serologic testing on emergency medical personnel in Polk County to determine: 1. COVID-19 prevalence 2. Rate of convalesced personnel (+antibodies) 3. Rate of asymptomatic carriers
Dokuz Eylul University
The study will be conducted in Dokuz Eylül University Hospital, COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) intensive care unit. Three primary conditions will be sought for participants: 1. Cases whose treatment process resulted in death will be included in the study. 2. The cases must be confirmed with the diagnosis of COVID-19 by the RT-PCR (real time polymerase chain reaction) test. 3. The first-degree relatives must consent for the participation of the subjects in the study by their first-degree relatives. In the study, samples will be taken from the liver, kidney, lung, and heart. The samples will be stored in a protective solution and sent to the pathology unit. The examinations will determine the microscopic damage to these organs caused by COVID-19. Also, the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2) will be investigated by RT-PCR in tissues. The presence of ACE-2 (angiotensin converting enzyme 2) receptor and SARS-CoV-2 nucleoprotein antibody will be investigated by histochemical examination in tissues.

Efficacy of Aerosol Combination Therapy of 13 Cis Retinoic Acid and Captopril for Treating Covid-19 Patients Via Indirect Inhibition of Transmembrane Protease, Serine 2 (TMPRSS2) Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2) has infected over 20,000,000 people causing over 700,000 deaths. It has no currently approved treatments.Airborne SARS-CoV-2 infections in humans initiate from the virus entering nasal and airway epithelial cells through binding to angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). Transmembrane protease, serine 2 (TMPRSS2), a cellular protease that activates the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, colocalizes with ACE2 and can prime SARS-CoV-2 fusion directly at the plasma membrane. Transmembrane protease, serine 2 (TMPRSS2) is an androgen receptor signaling target gene and an androgen-regulated cell-surface serine protease expressed predominantly in prostate and lung epithelial cell. TMPRSS2 is normally expressed several folds higher in the prostate relative to any other human tissue, though the normal physiological function(s) remains unknown. A study found that dihydrotestosterone (DHT) s a potent activator of TMPRSS2.On the other hand, Feily et al noted that low-dose isotretinoin (0.5 mg/kg/day for 15-20 weeks) in PCO patients with moderate to severe nodulocystic acne resulted in significant decreases in levels of serum total testosterone, prolactin, and dihydrotestosterone A study demonstrated that 13- cis -Retinoic acid competitively and reversibly inhibits dihydrotestosterone. Therefore, we suggest that 13- cis -Retinoic acid will downregulate TMPRSS2 expression thorough temporary preventing the effect of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) on the activation of TMPRSS2 gene expression. ACE inhibitors and ARBs are commonly taken by heart patients to reduce blood pressure and to treat heart failure.Earlier studies had cautioned that this class of drugs could possibly increase the risk for the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, infection and elevate COVID-19 severity. There is conflicting observational evidence about the potential clinical impact of ACE inhibitors and ARBs on patients with COVID-19. Select preclinical investigations have raised concerns about their safety in patients with COVID-19. On the other hand, Preliminary data hypothesise that angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and renin-angiotensin- aldosterone system (RAAS) inhibitors could benefit patients with COVID-19 by decreasing acute lung damage and preventing angiotensin-II-mediated pulmonary inflammation. Here in our review, we use established and emerging evidence based on the findings of previous studies and researches to propose that ACE inhibitors may benefit patients with COVID-19 via attenuating and abolishing the effect of androgenic hormones on inducing the expression of Transmembrane protease, serine 2 (TMPRSS2), even though, at the same time, ACE inhibitors cause an increase in the human cell surface receptor protein ACE2 which the novel coronavirus uses to enter and infect cells. A study on hypertensive rats demonstrated that using ACE inhibitors(captopril) abolished and attenuated the effect of dihydrotestosterone (DHT). In this study RAS inhibition exhibited beneficial effects on androgen-induced obesity and abolished the androgen-mediated increase in blood pressure (BP) observed in this model of PCOS. This project will provide novel data using a large cohort of more than 3000 transplanted patients. Risk and protective factors for SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 disease severity will be identified. The proportion of patients who develop antibodies after infection will be revealed. In this way the presence of these antibodies can be evaluated as a test for prior infection. Our study additionally will demonstrate how long these antibodies remain present and whether they are protective against a new infection.
