The most common complications include cardiac dysrhythmia, cardiac injury, myocarditis, heart failure, pulmonary embolism and disseminated intravascular coagulation. It is thought that the mechanism of action of the virus involves binding to a host transmembrane enzyme (angiotensin- converting enzyme 2 (ACE2)) to enter some lung, heart and immune cells and cause further damage. While ACE2 is essential for viral invasion, it is unclear if the use of the common antihypertensive drugs ACE inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) alter prognosis. This study aims to look closely at the health of the vascular system of patients after being treated in hospital for COVID-19 (confirmed by PCR test) and compare them to patients who had a hospital admission for suspected COVID-19 (negative PCR test) . Information from this study is essential so that clinicians treating patients with high blood pressure understand the impact of the condition and these hypertension medicines in the context of the current COVID-19 pandemic. This will allow doctors to effectively treat and offer advice to patients currently prescribed these medications or who are newly diagnosed with hypertension.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19 hit Spain in March 2020, most of the elective surgeries have been canceled everywhere. As soon as the epidemiology phase of the pandemic changed and the restrictions have been eased, different protocols have been put in place to screen patients for SARS-CoV-2 before surgery in order to reduce the spreading of the disease in hospitalized patients. To the best of the current state of knowledge, no recommendations or protocols have been established to guide surgeons in dealing with patients developing unspecific symptoms after surgeries, which could sign either of a post-op complication or COVID-19. The investigators have developed an enhanced pre and post-surgical protocol both to screen patients for COVID-19 before surgery and to promptly identify those patients suspicious for the viral infection during the post-op.

This Randomized Control Trial (RCT) proposes combination of extracorporeal cytokine removal by plasma exchange (PLEX) and additional infusion of convalescent plasma (CCP) collected from COVID-19 recovered individuals at the end of the PLEX procedure. The combination of cytokine removal by PLEX and CCP infusion is in onvestigators opinion more rational compared to CCP infusion alone and as such probably more effective in reducing the duration of mechanical ventilation, length of stay in the intensive care unit, and potentially also mortality.

Project is designed as a comprehensive population-based epidemiological study in Upper-Silesian Conurbation (Poland) aiming at: 1. analysis of available data on incidence and mortality due to COVID-19 and 2. estimation of the occurrence of viral infection SARS-CoV-2 as revealed by the results of serological test (ELISA: IgM, IgG), with assessment of risk factors. The project's objectives are: to assess incidence and mortality due COVID-19 according to sex, age and coexisting diseases; to determine the level of potential "underdiagnosis" of the magnitude of COVID-19 mortality using vital statistics data for Upper-Silesian Conurbation; to assess the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 based on the level of seropositivity in Upper-Silesian Conurbation; to identify host-related and environmental risk factors if the infection. Analysis of existing data will include monthly records on incidence and mortality over the period 01.01.2020-31.12.2020 and comparison of the findings with the monthly records of 2018 and 2019, for the same population. Cross-sectional epidemiological study will be located in three towne (Katowice, Sosnowiec, Gliwice). In each town a representative age-stratified sample of 2000 subjects will undergo questionnaire assessment and serological examination performed by serological test. The project corresponds with analogous population-based studies on COVID-19 in a number of countries and responds to the WHO recommendation in that field.
