The wearable biometric technology, if widely disseminated among vulnerable populations and the community-at-large, will help avoid the ravages of seasonal flu and other contagious illnesses, and the society will be better prepared for future waves of COVID-19 or other pandemics. Even if a vaccine is developed, due to immune senescence and immunocompromise, elderly people and those with chronic medical conditions may not be well protected by it. Continuous biomonitoring provides another layer of protection for them.

Background The significant risk of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 to healthcare staff mandated changes to Basic and Advanced Life Support (BLS and ALS) guidelines. As advised by the European Resuscitation Council (ERC), healthcare staff should put on airborne-precaution personal protective equipment (PPE) before starting chest compressions and/or airway interventions, as a minimum an FFP3 mask (FFP2 or N95 if FFP3 not available), eye and face protection and long-sleeved gown. However, wearing FFP3 masks has been shown to highly impair cardiopulmonary exercise capacity and the effect of wearing PPE on the quality of cardiopulmonary resuscitation is not known. The aim of this project is therefore to to investigate whether wearing PPE has an effect on the quality of chest compressions. Methods The study forsees a simulated CPR scenario on manikins. Study participants are lay rescuers and members of the rescue organization Croce Bianca. Each participant will perform 5 sequences consisting of 2 min of chest compressions altered by 2 min of no chest compressions (break), as recommended by the current ERC guidelines. The participants will perform the described CPR sequence two times in a cross-over design with randomized order, once while wearing PPE and once without wearing PPE. Between the two CPR sequences (i.e. with and without PPE) a break of 60 min for recovery will be given. During both CPR sequences, the quality of chest compressions will be measured.

The prognosis of patients with severe COVID-19 disease, whose lungs are so severely diseased that they need to be supported by veno-venous ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), is difficult to assess so far. Previously published data from studies, case reports and case series describe a very high mortality in this patient collective. The significance of established clinical prognostic cores in this patient population has not been systematically investigated. This is aggravated by the fact that even at very specialized centers only very few patients from this collective are (can be) treated, so that valid investigations are only possible in a multicenter patient collective. In this registry study, all patients diagnosed with COVID-19 and treated with vv-ECMO in the centers participating in the study should be retrospectively examined. The primary aim of the study is to investigate 30-day survival, secondary objectives include the analysis of different clinical scores at the time of ECMO implantation.

This study intends to find out how a cloth mask may impact exercise capacity, to provide guidance for exercisers to adjust their expectations and training accordingly. The investigators plan to asses exercise capacity through estimated peak oxygen consumption (eVO2peak), oxygen saturation and level of perceived exertion during treadmill based exercise while wearing a cloth mask compared to exercising without a cloth mask. The potential significance of this study is to determine if subjects can exercise safely and if their exercise training needs to be adjusted while following the current recommendations of wearing a cloth mask in public. The degree of airflow limitation experienced will depend on the type and fit of the mask being worn, and inadequeate airflow could possibly result in CO2 re-breathing if all air was not fully discharged from the mask with each breath. This re-breathing of CO2 could potentially limit the workload leading to a detriment in performance, and increase in adverse symptoms such as dizziness, lightheadedness, chest pain or shortness of breath that does not improve with rest.

The FDA has provided an emergency waiver for the use of non-invasive continuous glucose monitors (CGM) in hospitals, so frontline health care providers (in hospitals) can remotely monitor patients with diabetes thus reducing patient's discomfort, limiting exposure to COVID-19 and preserving critical personal protective equipment (PPE). The FreeStyle Libre 14-day system is a continuous glucose monitoring system consisting of a handheld reader (smart phone may be used) and a sensor applied with adhesive to back of the upper arm. In order to evaluate the reliability of the Freestyle Libre CGM for in-patient use, we propose a study which will examine the correlation between the libre CGM data and capillary blood glucose test - the current standard of care taken by the Accuchek Inform II platform.

In COVID-19 pandemic, it is of critical importance to identify a rapid and simple diagnostic method to be used in clinical settings to timely inform and refine strategies that can prevent, control, and stop the spread of SARS-CoV-2. The 2019-nCoV IgG/IgM Rapid Test Cassette (Whole Blood/Serum/Plasma) is a qualitative, membrane-based immunoassay for the detection of immunoglobulin G (IgG) and Immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 in whole blood, serum or plasma specimen. Clinical specimens from patients who were suspected of being infected with 2019-nCoV will be used to evaluate the performance of the assay.

With the outbreak of 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), the frontline medical workers faced enormous stress, including a high risk of infection and inadequate protection from contamination, isolation, patients with negative emotions, a lack of contact with their families, and exhaustion, which may cause mental health problems. The investigators plan to collect the faecal samples and clinical assessments from a part of frontline medical workers in three time points to analyse the changing profile of gut microbiome according to outcomes of 16s rRNA sequencing. The samples from the matched health controls will also be sequenced to compare with the exposed group in gut microbiome community.
