At least 1 in 6 COVID-19 patients admitted to hospital to receive extra oxygen will die of complications. In patients with COVID-19, invasive treatment such as mechanical ventilation (e.g. breathing with a machine) is associated with a 50% increased risk of death. Invasive treatments use a lot of healthcare resources in intensive care units and may lead to further deaths if patients do not have access to care. The investigators aim to improve outcomes for COVID-19 patients by implementing hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). HBOT allows patients to breathe 100% oxygen in a special chamber at a pressure higher than sea level. It is approved by Health Canada for 14 conditions. HBOT is safe when administered by experienced teams. There are two main causes of death in severe COVID-19 respiratory infections: (i) a decreased diffusion of oxygen from the lungs to the blood and (ii) an increased inflammatory response (also called a "cytokine storm"). HBOT leads to increased oxygen level in blood, has strong anti-inflammatory effects, and may destroy the virus responsible for COVID-19 disease. The initial experience with HBOT and COVID-19 from China, France and the United States is promising in that it prevents further worsening of the condition and need for intensive care. The investigators propose to test the effectiveness of HBOT for COVID-19 patients who are admitted to hospital to receive extra oxygen. Using the most rigorous and innovative research methods, this Canadian-led international study will operate at 5 centers across 3 countries (Canada: Ottawa, Toronto, Edmonton; Switzerland: Geneva; UK: Rugby/London). The investigators anticipate that when treated by HBOT, COVID-19 patients needing extra oxygen to breathe will see significant health improvements as well as a decrease in complications, inflammation in the blood, need for invasive care, death, and cost of care.

A crisis situation leads to changes in life. During December 2019, many people contracted pneumonia in the Chinese city of Wuhan. On January 7, 2020, the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) was identified as the cause of this disease. Within five months, the virus spread around the globe and forced countries to restrict public life. Due to the high infection rates in Europe, a lockdown followed between March and April 2020 (except in Sweden). As the number of infections decreased, European countries began to gradually relax the lockdown from May 2020. The lockdown and the later stages of loosening have an impact on lifestyle. Institutions of higher education must also adapt to this situation and have switched to distance learning. The University of Applied Sciences of Bern (BFH), Department of Health Professions with the Departments (DHP) of Nutrition and Dietetics and Physiotherapy, considers the question of the degree to which nutritional and exercise behavior has changed. The findings provide recommendations for future crises for students and employees of the BFH-DHP. In order to achieve this, at the BFH-DHP two anonymous online surveys will be conducted.

However, intensive care patients might suffer from serious side effects such as prolonged oxygen desaturation and adverse change in lung compliance and resistance. This study aims to evaluate these changes and determine their impact on patient stability.

Communication with patients on their clinical status is important in delivering care in the emergency department. During times of high volume or complex patients, there may be lapses in communicating with patients about their hospital course or plans of action. These miscommunications may be enhanced during the current COVID-19 pandemic as there is minimized in-person interaction with patients in order to conserve personal protective equipment and decrease the risk of disease transmission. This study utilizes a virtual white board to deliver updates to patients about the status of their emergency department stay.

Mental health concerns have been on the rise since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has worsened risk factors for suicide, including job loss, anxiety, depression, and loneliness. Timely and easy access to mental health services is a dire need, and this study will test the efficacy and feasibility of a brief clinical intervention, Brief Skills for Safer Living (Brief-SfSL), at reducing suicide risk. The goal of this study is to investigate whether Brief-SfSL, delivered online, is a suitable, acceptable and effective method for reducing suicide risk and providing timely mental health services. The results from this study will provide vital insight into effective interventions for suicide risk that are accessible and can be widely distributed.

The purpose of this study is to compare the mother-infant emotional connection formed during the pandemic in standard care (SC) versus Family Nurture Intervention (FNI) pairs, an evidence-based intervention designed to counteract the adverse effects of maternal-infant disconnection. In prior research on preterm infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), FNI participants demonstrated increased quality of maternal caregiving behaviors and significant improvements in premature infants' neurodevelopment across multiple domains, including social-relatedness and attention problems. Goals of FNI include assisting mothers in providing appropriate types of stimulation for their babies that are important for social, emotional, and neurobehavioral development as well as reducing stress physiology in both mother and infant. Data gathered in this study will help the investigators learn more about the underlying mechanisms that take place during mother-infant interactions and examine how these play a role in setting the infant up for the best neurodevelopmental trajectory. Intervention will be conducted electronically both in the Well Baby Nursery (WBN) and at home over the following 4 months. Assessments will consist of videos of mother-infant interactions at the time of each intervention session, and pediatrician-led follow-up surveys conducted in the linked Institutional Review Board-approved study.

The healthcare industry is inherently demanding, stressful, and, at times, emotionally draining. On a typical day, many workers must make rapid and critical decisions, manage numerous demands, team conflicts, and challenging situations with patients and their families. For some health care workers (HCW), the current pandemic - COVID-19 - has also exacerbated these challenges. Providing psychological support is key in alleviating stress among HCWs, yet the situation does not require therapy because HCWs do not principally suffer from a mental disorder. RECHARGE was specifically developed for HCWs and is an abbreviated online version of Problem Management Plus, an evidence-based intervention that helps to cope with stress in times of crisis. As a brief psychological intervention for adults affected by adversity emerging from stress exposure, RECHARGE teaches people three well-documented strategies to manage acute stress (a: managing stress, b: managing worry, c: meaningful activity). It includes psychoeducation, arousal reduction techniques, managing worries and problem-solving skills, behavioral activation, and enhancement of meaningful activities, which are all based on the principles of cognitive-behavioral therapy. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of RECHARGE to reduce stress in HCWs and enhance their work performance. Participants in this randomized controlled trial (RCT) study are randomly assigned to either RECHARGE or the active control group. To this end, stress including symptoms of burnout, worries, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and work performance will be measured at baseline, post-intervention, and at a 2 and 6 month follow up.

SARS-CoV-2 infection seems to induce in most critical cases an excessive and aberrant hyper-inflammatory host immune response that is associated with a so-called "cytokine storm", moreover pro-thrombotic derangements of haemostatic system is another common finding in most severe forms of COVID19 infections, which may be explained by the activation of coagulative cascade primed by inflammatory stimuli, in line with what is observed in many other forms of sepsis. Targeting inflammatory responses exploiting steroids' anti-inflammatory activity along with thrombosis prevention may be a promising therapeutic option to improve patients' outcome. Despite the biological plausibility, no good evidence is available on the efficacy and safety of heparin on sepsis patients, and many issues have to be addressed, regarding the proper timing, dosages and administration schedules of anticoagulant drugs. The primary objective is to assess the hypothesis that an adjunctive therapy with steroids and unfractionated heparin (UFH) or with steroids and low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) are more effective in reducing any-cause mortality in critically-ill patients with pneumonia from COVID- 19 infection compared to low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) alone. Mortality will be measured at 28 days. The study is designed as a multicenter, national, interventional, randomized, investigator sponsored, three arms study. Patients, who satisfy all inclusion criteria and no exclusion criteria, will be randomly assigned in a ratio 1:1:1 to one of the three treatment groups: LMWH group, LMWH+steroids or UFH+steroid group. A possible result showing the efficacy of the composite treatment in reducing the mortality rate among critically ill patients with pneumonia from COVID-19 infection will lead to a revision of the current clinical approach to this disease.

Whether university teaching on campus with infection control measures in place is associated with higher risk of COVID-19 than online instruction, is unknown. The investigators will assess this by conducting repeated surveys among students at universities and university colleges in Norway, where some instruction is given in-person, and some is provided online (hybrid model). The investigators will ask about the students' COVID-19 status, and how much in-person and online instruction the students are getting. The investigators will estimate the association between in-person instruction and COVID-19-risk using multivariate regression, controlling for likely confounders. The investigators will also assess whether type of instruction is associated with how satisfied the students are with the instruction the students are offered, their quality of life, and learning outcomes.
