Around the world, researchers are working extremely hard to develop new treatments and interventions for COVID-19 with new clinical trials opening nearly every day. This directory provides you with information, including enrollment detail, about these trials. In some cases, researchers are able to offer expanded access (sometimes called compassionate use) to an investigational drug when a patient cannot participate in a clinical trial.
The information provided here is drawn from ClinicalTrials.gov. If you do not find a satisfactory expanded access program here, please search in our COVID Company Directory. Some companies consider expanded access requests for single patients, even if they do not show an active expanded access listing in this database. Please contact the company directly to explore the possibility of expanded access.
Emergency INDs
To learn how to apply for expanded access, please visit our Guides designed to walk healthcare providers, patients and/or caregivers through the process of applying for expanded access. Please note that given the situation with COVID-19 and the need to move as fast as possible, many physicians are requesting expanded access for emergency use. In these cases, FDA will authorize treatment by telephone and treatment can start immediately. For more details, consult FDA guidance. Emergency IND is the common route that patients are receiving convalescent plasma.
Search Tips
To search this directory, simply type a drug name, condition, company name, location, or other term of your choice into the search bar and click SEARCH. For broadest results, type the terms without quotation marks; to narrow your search to an exact match, put your terms in quotation marks (e.g., “acute respiratory distress syndrome” or “ARDS”). You may opt to further streamline your search by using the Status of the study and Intervention Type options. Simply click one or more of those boxes to refine your search.

The COVID-19 disease has been subject to numerous publications since its emergence. Almost 20% of people suffering from COVID-19 develop severe to critical symptoms and require hospitalization, often in Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Respiratory failure is the main reason for admission in ICU of these patients. Therapeutic strategies implemented for the management of critically-ill patients may often lead to short-term muscular and functional alterations resulting in ICU-Acquired Weakness (ICUAW). These lead to long-term disabilities expressing trough dependence and quality of life impairment of survivors. The purpose of this study is to assess the quality of life, dependence and survival at one year in patients who survived from COVID-19 in ICU and are admitted in post-ICU setting for difficult weaning purpose. Ancillary studies aim to assess the course of muscle function (atrophy, structural modifications), lung function (loss of aeration) and safety of early mobilization.
University Health Network, Toronto
The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of COVID -19 in the cancer patient population. This will be done by looking at the rate of asymptomatic COVID-19 infection in cancer patients receiving cancer therapy, as well as their immune response. This is a sub-study of the U-DEPLOY study: UHN Umbrella Trial Defining Coordinated Approach to Pandemic Trials of COVID-19 and Data Harmonization to Accelerate Discovery. U-DEPLOY helps to facilitate timely conduct of studies across the University Health Network (UHN) and other centers.
University of Manchester
A team at the University of Manchester are developing a test that tcould be helpful in detecting immunity to the Coronavirus (which causes the COVID-19 disease) in participants with inflammatory arthritis. It is based on a flu assay has already developed; the team will replace the flu antigen with a Coronavirus antigen to see if it is effective. This project aims to develop a test to see if people who have had the virus have developed immunity to it. This could help to predict who might or might not get the disease a second time, who should stay at home to be protected from potential infection or who will not develop any symptoms, even if exposed to the virus. When vaccination trials against the Coronavirus will be launched, this test could also help to see if the vaccine is effective.
University Medicine Greifswald
The main objectives of this study are 1) to establish the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in asymptomatic healthcare workers (HCWs) in an early phase of community spread as well as 2) to monitor the future spread of the disease by assessing serological responses to SARS-CoV-2 in symptomatic and asymptomatic HCWs over time and 3) to improve the assessment of the immune response and its protective effect as well as the assessment of infectivity of affected HCWs and 4) to evaluate the value and significance of antibody formation and serological antibody tests and 5) to be able to evaluate possible future preventive and / or therapeutic approaches against SARS-CoV-2, e.g. to assess vaccination effects
OSF Healthcare System
To compare various treatments provided to positive COVID-19 patients at locations across the OSF Ministry. Provide the opportunity to compare the effectiveness of various treatments and treatment timelines provided to specific cohorts of patients that have the potential to impact future treatment plans for COVID-19 patients and/or future research hypotheses.
Alexion
This study evaluated the efficacy, safety, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics of ravulizumab administered in adult participants with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) severe pneumonia, acute lung injury, or acute respiratory distress syndrome. Participants were randomly assigned to receive ravulizumab in addition to best supportive care (BSC) (2/3 of the participants) or BSC alone (1/3 of the participants). BSC consisted of medical treatment and/or medical interventions per routine hospital practice.
Emory University
The purpose of this pilot study is to measure the impact of non-invasive pneumatic manipulation of transthoracic pressure on oxygenation in patients with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) due to Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID 19) who are on mechanical ventilator support. This will be achieved by a pneumatic Vest placed around the chest wall of consenting patients who meet inclusion criteria. The Vest is essentially a non-invasive segmental device placed upon the anterior and posterior right and left aspects of the chest wall. The researchers have the ability to inflate and deflate the chambers of the Vest to achieve preset pressures as determined by the protocol and observe the patient's physiological response. Participants will have up to four hours of intervention with the study intervention, followed by 1 hour of post-intervention observation.
Art of Living Foundation
This study will examine the feasibility of conducting an online Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) in frontline hospital and long term care healthcare staff in managing COVID-19 patients in London, ON. The study will randomize participants to Sudarshan Kriya Yoga (SKY) or a Health Enhancement Program (HEP).
National Cancer Institute (NCI)
This phase I/II trial studies low-dose radiation therapy as a focal anti-inflammatory treatment for patients with pneumonia or SARS associated with COVID-19 infection.

This is a prospective, multi-site study designed to evaluate whether the use of hydroxychloroquine in healthcare workers (HCW), Nursing Home Workers (NHW), first responders (FR), and Detroit Department of Transportation bus drivers (DDOT) in SE, Michigan, can prevent the acquisition, symptoms and clinical COVID-19 infection The primary objective of this study is to determine whether the use of daily or weekly oral hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) therapy will prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 viremia and clinical COVID-19 infection healthcare workers (HCW) and first responders (FR) (EMS, Fire, Police, bus drivers) in Southeast Michigan. Preventing COVID-19 transmission to HCW, FR, and Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT) bus drivers is a critical step in preserving the health care and first responder force, the prevention of COVID-19 transmission in health care facilities, with the potential to preserve thousands of lives in addition to sustaining health care systems and civil services both nationally and globally. If efficacious, further studies on the use of hydroxychloroquine to prevent COVID-19 in the general population could be undertaken, with a potential impact on hundreds of thousands of lives.
